Visit As Catedrais – Galicia’s Natural Cathedral by the Sea

As Catedrais, located on Galicia’s northern coast near Ribadeo, is a breathtaking beach renowned for its majestic rock formations that resemble the arches and buttresses of a cathedral. This natural wonder offers visitors a unique blend of geological beauty and coastal charm, making it a must-visit destination in Galicia.

How Nature Carved It

The incredible rock formations of As Catedrais were sculpted over millions of years by the relentless forces of nature. The combination of wind, salt, and especially the powerful Atlantic tides gradually eroded the coastal cliffs, creating towering arches, sea caves, and flying buttresses that now resemble a gothic cathedral built by the ocean itself.

The geological makeup of the region—primarily slate and schist—allowed these natural processes to shape the rocks into dramatic formations. The vertical layering of the rock, combined with natural fractures, made it easier for the sea to carve deep crevices and tunnels through the cliffs.

Today, these natural structures stand as a testament to the ever-changing landscape of Galicia’s rugged northern coast. With every tide, the scenery shifts slightly, reminding visitors that this cathedral of stone is still very much alive and in motion.

How To Get There

As Catedrais Beach is located on the northern coast of Galicia, near the town of Ribadeo in the province of Lugo. It’s easily accessible by car via the A-8 motorway. The nearest train station is in Ribadeo, with regional connections from cities like A Coruña or Oviedo. From Ribadeo, it’s a short taxi or bus ride to the beach.

Best time to visit:
The beach is only fully accessible during low tide, when you can walk beneath the arches and explore the sea caves. At high tide, much of the beach disappears under water. For this reason, it’s essential to check tide schedules in advance. The best time to visit is during spring or early autumn, when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are smaller.
